Each price is from the company's own pricing page on the date shown, in its own currency; we do not convert. A page we could not read is marked could not read, and a page that asks for a quote is marked quote only. Prices can differ by country.

What pushes the price up

  • 2 of the 6 we could read offer a free plan, and 1 offers a time-limited trial.
  • 2 of the 6 we could read state a setup, hardware or licence cost on top of the monthly price (the notes below say which).

What to know about each price

  • Toast: The $0 Starter Kit has no monthly fee; its cost is recovered through card processing and hardware, and the system needs Toast's own hardware.
  • Lightspeed Restaurant: Hardware is an extra cost and card payment rates are not on the page. Extra registers (+$39 a month), kitchen screens (+$40 a month each), reservations (+$69) and gift cards (+$39) are monthly add-ons.
  • Square for Restaurants: Hardware is bought separately, for example Terminal $329, Register $1,099, Handheld $349 and Reader $65.
  • Zeller POS: The software is free only if you take card payments through Zeller at 1.4%, and the terminal is a one-off purchase with no rental fee. The page prints two terminal prices, $99 and $199, without saying which is current.
  • Doshii: Doshii links delivery apps to a venue's till; it is not a till itself. Priced by how many delivery apps are connected, and the $0 plan is only for eligible CommBank merchants.
  • Bopple: The A$49 plan is online ordering, not a till. A branded web app is A$99 a month extra and own iOS and Android apps are A$399.

What to look for in restaurants software

Know what is in the walk-in, what ran short on Saturday and what Monday's supplier order should be.

A tool for restaurants has to fix these:

  • Food cost is guessed from last month's invoices.
  • Stock lives in a spreadsheet and a head.
  • The till and the supplier order do not talk.

What to look for in cafes software

Know when milk and beans are low before Saturday: count the bar, the fridge and the cabinet, and order from what ran low.

A tool for cafes has to fix these:

  • Milk and beans run out on a Saturday.
  • Nobody knows which items make money.
  • The POS charges a monthly fee plus a cut.

Questions

About the price

What is the cheapest of these?

Prices are in the currency each page names and are not ranked across currencies: 3 in A$, from A$49 to A$129 a month; 2 with no currency named. The lowest price is often the plan with the fewest features, so check what each includes. StockRoom is free to 50 products.

Why do prices differ so much?

Mostly who is counted and what is included: per user or per seat, the number of jobs or products, payment processing, and setup.

Can StockRoom work out my food cost percentage?

Not yet. StockRoom does not cost recipes or dishes. What it does give you is cost of goods sold for a month or an income year: opening stock plus what you received minus what is left, at cost, to print or export. A dish's cost you work out by hand.

Does it replace my till or my table system?

No. Keep your till and your table system. StockRoom counts and orders stock; it does not take payments or record the dishes you sell. A till where each sale takes its recipe from the shelf has been built and tested on its own for cafes, and is not part of StockRoom.

Does it have recipes for each drink?

Not inside the app. A cafe till where each size and each milk option uses its own ingredients has been built and tested on its own, in a simulated month of trading. It is not part of StockRoom, and bringing it in is not scheduled.

Can it take card payments?

No. StockRoom records stock; taking the payment is not built.
