We do not convert currencies. A page we could not read is marked could not read, a page that asks for a quote is marked quote only, and the reasons are listed below the table. Pages can show different prices to visitors in different countries. A price with no currency named is shown with the sign the page used; it may be the United States version or the one for the country the page assumed we were in, so check the page you are sent to.

What pushes the price up

  • 7 of the 8 charge per user, or for extra users, on at least one plan, so the price grows with the team.
  • 1 of the 8 shows a quote request instead of a price.
  • 3 of the 8 offer a free plan, and 6 offer a time-limited trial.

Who each one is for

Taken from what each company's own page says it is for.

  • Deputy: shift-based businesses, with a separate flexible weekly plan for short-term events such as conferences and festivals.
  • Sling: businesses of every size, from a small team to a franchise with several locations, across industries such as food and drink, retail, healthcare and education.
  • Humanity: small teams or businesses (the Essentials description), with Professional marked as the most popular plan.
  • Connecteam: small businesses (the page calls its free Small Business Plan the most powerful solution for small businesses), with paid tiers by hub for operations, communications and HR.
  • When I Work: businesses scheduling anywhere from five employees to 500, such as restaurants, retail stores and dental practices, with Essentials aimed at saving time on the weekly schedule.
  • Tanda: employers with hourly workers (the page says Tanda Payroll works best for them), in industries such as retail, hospitality and early learning.
  • Homebase: small business teams (the page calls it a top-rated app built for small business teams), with a free plan for one location and up to 10 employees.
  • Rosterfy: medium to large organisations managing 100 or more volunteers (stated on the North America version of the page).

What to know about each price

  • Rosterfy: Add-ons are said to be available but are not named or priced, and Quick Start packages are listed in the menu with no prices.
  • Deputy: Per-user pricing in AUD excluding taxes, with a minimum spend of A$30 a month per invoice on the monthly Lite, Core and Pro plans. Payroll is a separate $5 per user per month add-on, and annual plans are charged up front for the year.
  • Sling: The page says Premium and Business bill only for the people who use the platform, and customers can save 15% by paying annually. The two figures on each paid card are not labelled as monthly or annual on the page.
  • Humanity: Priced per employee per month billed annually, and the employee count includes managers and administrators, with charges prorated for people added mid-term.
  • Connecteam: A flat monthly price covers the first 30 users and each extra user costs a small monthly fee, and the three hubs (operations, communications, HR and skills) each have their own price list. The free Small Business Plan covers up to 10 users.
  • When I Work: Per-user pricing with no contracts or hidden fees, and the FAQ says seats can be added, reduced or cancelled at any time.
  • Tanda: Only the bundle has a price on the page; each single module and the All in One plan have Request pricing buttons. GST is stated as extra.
  • Homebase: Priced per location, and the page defines a location as a physical address, so two addresses count as two locations. Other add-ons include Tip Manager at $25 a month per location and Task Manager at $13 a month per location.

What to check before you pay

  • Whether the price is per employee, per location or flat, and whether there is a minimum.
  • Whether the roster feeds payroll, or you retype the hours.
  • Award, overtime and break rules for your country, and who keeps them up to date.
  • Shift swaps and availability from a phone, because that is what staff actually use.

Companies we could not read

These pages did not give us a price we could read. That is a limit of how we read, not a sign that the company hides its prices.

  • 7shifts: its prices did not show when we read the page, and a script may be drawing them.
  • Planday: its pricing page did not give us a price we could read.

What we do about staff scheduling and rostering software

We do not sell a roster tool. If your roster is tangled up with your stock, your jobs or your bookings, we can build one into the same system, quoted in writing.
